Master's degree course in Regional Science/Spatial Planning

Students may choose between two Master's degree programmes:

Master's degree programme in Regional Science/Spatial at KIT focussing on strategies for underdeveloped regions, final degree: Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Regional Science at KIT, Germany (*)

and

German-Chilean master's degree programme in Regional Science/Spatial Planning focussing on natural disasters and disaster prevention, final degrees: Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Regional Science at KIT, Germany and Magíster en Ciencias Regionales at Universidad de Concepción (UdeC), Chile (*)

Target group

  • German and non-German graduates holding a licenciate's or bachelor's degree in a field related to spatial planning (urban planning, geography, political economy, sociology, ecology, agronomy, forestry and others)
    • Desired qualification:
      • Practical experience in one of the above-mentioned fields of work and/or your specialisation
      • Scientific and critical mind
      • Interest in transdisciplinary working
      • A cosmopolitan and proactive attitude
  • Focus: graduates from developing countries who want to work in the field of spatial planning or development cooperation in their home countries.
German language skills (for non-native speakers): to enrol at KIT, C1 according to the CEFR or an equivalent certificate ('TestDaF 4x4, DSH-2) is required

  • Fundamentals of regional science: local ecology, economy and sociology
  • Regional science and spatial planning challenges in developing and newly industrialising countries
  • Tools to analyze regional structures, developments and conflicts between land users: qualitative and quantitative research methods, GIS, and others
  • Methods, instruments and problems of spatial planning on local and regional scale, inside and outside of Germany
  • Administrative structures, strategies and network management in an international context
  • Threads and opportunities of spatial planning as a tool for risk management and adaptation to climate change
