German-French colloquium on combating homelessness on 8 and 9 December 2025 at TRIANGEL in Karlsruhe
The colloquium, organised by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), brought together the French Interministerial Delegation for Housing and Access to Housing (DIHAL) and the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction (BMWSB), as well as experts from France and Germany, to discuss innovative approaches to combating homelessness. IfR research assistant Carolin Seiberlich supported the organisation of the colloquium and presented initial research findings on cooperative housing acquisition in Karlsruhe, which were obtained as part of the EU Horizon project PREFIGURE.
Key impressions from the colloquium:
The comparison between the two countries opened up new perspectives and promoted a common understanding of the challenges. Around 40 researchers, political decision-makers and representatives of non-governmental organisations took the opportunity to exchange best practices and develop joint solutions.
Key topics:
1. Data and statistics: The importance of reliable data for effective strategies was emphasised.
2. Mental health: The focus was on the link between homelessness and mental health.
3. Young people in precarious situations: Special attention was paid to prevention and support for young people.
The colloquium laid the foundation for future Franco-German cooperation and demonstrated the importance of joint initiatives in the fight against homelessness.
On Tuesday, 9 December 2025, Prof. Peter Mackie gave a guest lecture at KIT on the prevention of homelessness. The importance of preventing homelessness is now widely recognised in politics, and practical efforts are being made worldwide. However, persistent structural barriers and the continued prioritisation of resources and other research hinder society's responsibility to end homelessness.
