IECO Summer School 2022
Eco-Industrial Development

Valdivia, Chile
March 27 – April 2, 2022

This is to be made possible, for example, by treating industrial parks as ecosystems (individual plants as ecological species). Starting from this idea, an attempt is made to transfer ecosystem properties to industrial and urban systems. One example is symbiosis, in which species live together in ecosystems by exchanging substances and energy. In the context of industrial symbiosis, for example, an attempt is made to turn waste, wastewater and waste heat from one organization into an input for another organization in order to exploit resources and reduce waste in a similar way to ecosystems. This principle can also be used to create symbioses between industry and urban metabolism.

The Summer School

The Summer school covers addresses the entire research cycle from basic research to innovation management and technology transfer to industry. The program includes basic scientific research, teaching formats and the aspect of innovation management in EID (events at industrial partners). The entrepreneurship and start-up eco-system will be explored.

Combination of theory and practice: lectures and workshops are combined with field trips (excursion to project sites, industrial partners etc.), so that students learn the basic theories and application perspectives on the same day.

The summer school will be a multidisciplinary event: Various EID topics will be taught by specialists from Chile and Germany. Among the topics: The sustainable use of biomass, sustainable land use, water-energy nexus use and urban industrial development.

Next to scientific experts, there will be representatives and perspectives from industry, civil society and politics in order to account for the transdisciplinary dimension of the topic.

This is a bi-national Summer School: Cultural and social events complement the program and contribute to German-Chilean friendship.
